Ellie Kildunne Aims for Olympic Redemption with Great Britain Rugby Sevens Team
Ellie Kildunne, the 24-year-old rugby star, is on a mission to make up for missing out on the Olympics three years ago as she sets her sights on securing a spot in the Great Britain rugby sevens team for this summer’s event in Paris. Despite helping Team GB qualify for the 2020 Games, which were postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Kildunne did not compete in Tokyo after accepting a full-time contract from the RFU to play traditional 15-a-side rugby union in 2019.
After playing a key role in England’s recent Six Nations triumph and Grand Slam victory, Kildunne is determined to earn a place in the 2024 Olympic squad, having been unable to participate in the previous Games. Reflecting on her journey, Kildunne expressed her eagerness to seize the opportunity and strive for greatness on the world stage.
As one of the standout performers in the Red Roses team, Kildunne’s exceptional talent and scoring prowess have been instrumental in England’s success. With a renewed focus on her sevens career, Kildunne is eager to showcase her skills and contribute to the team’s success in Paris.
Under the guidance of head coach John Mitchell, Kildunne has thrived in a more dynamic and expansive style of play, which has allowed her to shine on the field. Embracing the challenge of playing a different role within the team, Kildunne credits her coach for instilling confidence and pushing the players to reach their full potential.
As Kildunne continues to excel on the rugby pitch, her determination and passion for the game are evident in her performances. With the Olympic dream within reach, Kildunne’s journey towards redemption is one filled with resilience, ambition, and unwavering dedication to her craft.
