Rehana Khalil, a trailblazing Muslim woman, is making waves in the world of basketball as she continues to break barriers and inspire others with her incredible talent and determination.

The 38-year-old athlete, who plays for the Manchester Mystics in the Women’s National Basketball League Division 1, is the only player to have represented a Great Britain basketball team while wearing a hijab. Despite facing challenges and stereotypes, Khalil has risen above them to become a standout player and coach in the sport.

Khalil’s journey in basketball has not been without its obstacles. At the beginning of her career, she did not wear a hijab, but after taking a hiatus and returning to the sport, she made the decision to wear one. However, she faced a setback when the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) had a ban on headgear, including religious headwear like hijabs. This ban was eventually lifted in 2017, allowing Khalil and other athletes to participate in the sport without compromising their faith.

In addition to overcoming clothing barriers, Khalil also navigates cultural and religious practices within the basketball community. She has had to explain her religious beliefs, such as avoiding physical contact with males, to officials and teammates. Despite these challenges, Khalil remains dedicated to educating others and breaking down stereotypes.

Her efforts have not gone unnoticed, as she recently received Basketball England’s Inspiring Female of the Year award for the north west region. Joe Forber, co-founder of Manchester Mystics, praised Khalil as a role model and an example for others to follow.
