Gary Kirsten and Jason Gillespie appointed as head coaches for Pakistan ahead of T20 World Cup

Former South African opener Gary Kirsten has been appointed as the head coach of Pakistan’s white-ball teams, while ex-Australian paceman Jason Gillespie will lead the Test side in preparation for the upcoming T20 World Cup in June.

Kirsten, who famously led India to victory at the 2011 50-over World Cup, brings a wealth of experience to the role. The 56-year-old is currently coaching the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League and will join the Pakistan team on their tour of England next month.

“I am excited to work with the Pakistan team and help them achieve their desired goals,” Kirsten said. “Winning global events is a significant objective, and I am confident that we can achieve success in the upcoming tournament in June and in future competitions.”

Gillespie, on the other hand, has a successful coaching career, having led Yorkshire to win the English County Championship in 2014 and 2015. The 49-year-old is ready to take on the challenge of coaching the Pakistan Test side and is aware of the expectations that come with the role.

“I understand the rich legacy and passionate fan base of Pakistan cricket,” Gillespie said. “I am ready to take on this role and work towards achieving success with the team.”

Former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood will serve as assistant coach to both Kirsten and Gillespie, providing valuable support to the coaching staff. The appointments are part of PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi’s reorganization of cricket in Pakistan, which has seen changes in the selection committee and improvements in player fitness.

Pakistan will play a series of T20 internationals in Ireland before facing England and competing in the T20 World Cup in the United States. With Kirsten and Gillespie at the helm, Pakistan fans can look forward to an exciting and competitive performance from their team in the upcoming tournament.
