The New Saints Chairman Mike Harris Calls for More Competitive Cymru Premier League

The New Saints chairman, Mike Harris, is calling for more competition in the Cymru Premier league and has thrown down the gauntlet to other clubs to step up their game.

The New Saints, the only full-time club in the league, dominated this season, finishing a staggering 33 points ahead of second-placed Connah’s Quay Nomads to clinch their 16th Cymru Premier title. However, Harris believes that for the league to progress and improve, there needs to be more competition at the top.

Harris emphasized the importance of having a long-term philosophy and strategy in place, rather than just throwing money at the club in the hopes of instant success. He highlighted the need for clubs to focus on player recruitment, youth development, and creating a sustainable model for success.

The Football Association of Wales (FAW) has announced plans for a major overhaul of the league, including more clubs, Friday night games, and the introduction of VAR. Harris welcomed this investment and is eager to see how the league will be restructured to increase competitiveness.

Harris acknowledged the progress made by clubs like Connah’s Quay and Barry Town in challenging The New Saints, but stressed the need for sustained effort and investment to bridge the gap at the top of the league.

As the FAW prepares to unveil the new format and clubs involved in September, Harris is optimistic about the future of the Cymru Premier and is eager to see how the changes will enhance the level of competition in the league.
