Mark Madsen Adds Two Transfer Players to Cal Basketball Program

Cal Bears basketball coach Mark Madsen has been on a recruiting spree, securing commitments from nine transfer players since April 8. The first two signings were officially announced on Monday, with BJ Omot and DeJuan “DJ” Campbell joining the program.

Omot, a 6-foot-8 forward from North Dakota, was a standout in the Summit League last season, averaging 14.8 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. Madsen praised Omot’s skills, size, and length, calling him a natural scorer with guard-like abilities. With two years of eligibility remaining, Omot is expected to make an immediate impact for the Bears.

On the other hand, Campbell, a 6-2 guard from Western Carolina, brings a tough and intense style of play to Cal. A double-digit scorer last season, Campbell is known for his shooting prowess, making 47% of his 3-pointers in conference play. Madsen highlighted Campbell’s professionalism on and off the court, emphasizing his winning mentality.

The additions of Omot and Campbell come at a crucial time for the Bears, who had just two returning scholarship players with minimal scoring output. With a total of nine transfers committed, along with two returnees and incoming freshman guard Jeremiah Wilkinson, Cal’s roster is undergoing a significant transformation.

The remaining seven spring commitments include a mix of forwards, big men, and a point guard, showcasing Madsen’s efforts to rebuild the team for the upcoming season. As the Bears gear up for a new era under Madsen’s leadership, the influx of talent from the transfer portal signals a promising future for Cal basketball.
