Dan Riva Resigns as Framingham High Boys Hockey Coach

Dan Riva, a former player who led Framingham High School’s boys hockey team to a state championship, has announced his resignation as head coach, athletic director Paul Spear revealed on Monday. Riva, a 1993 FHS graduate, took over coaching duties in 2021 and has since made a significant impact on the program.

During his tenure, the Flyers finished with a record of 9-11-1 last season, ultimately falling to Xaverian in the MIAA Division 1 Round of 32. However, the team did secure a victory in the Ed Cahoon Memorial Cup Tournament at the Ice Palace in February under Riva’s guidance.

Riva succeeded Will Ortiz, another former Flyer, who had been at the helm since 2016. Both Riva and Ortiz played under Spear, who coached the team from 1999 to 2016. Spear commended Riva for his professionalism and dedication to the players, stating that he always showed up prepared and treated the team with respect.

A product of Framingham South before the school merged with Framingham North, Riva has a deep connection to the program. He went on to play at RPI and professionally before returning to coach at his alma mater.

Senior captain Noah Albright praised Riva for his coaching style, emphasizing his ability to connect with the players and instill important values both on and off the ice. The school will soon begin the search for Riva’s replacement, with plans to announce a new coach in early June.

As Riva moves on from his coaching role, the Framingham High School community wishes him the best of luck in his future endeavors.
