Newmarket Kids Get Chance to Try Hockey Thanks to Community Support

Twenty-seven kids from Newmarket school recently had the opportunity to try their hand at hockey, thanks to the efforts of a dedicated team of supporters in the community. Led by Newmarket resident Jay Maor, a Maple Leaf Public School teacher with a passion for the sport, the Learn to Play Hockey program aimed to introduce kids from marginalized communities to the game.

With a grant from Hockey Canada, Maor and other volunteers ran a six-week program that wrapped up on April 27. The program not only taught the kids about hockey but also helped boost their self-confidence and social skills. Maor emphasized the importance of providing opportunities for kids who may not otherwise be able to afford to play hockey.

Brent Caddock, a longtime friend of Maor, noted the progress and perseverance of the children involved in the program, highlighting the joy and enthusiasm they brought to the ice. The Town of Newmarket also played a role by providing ice time for the kids, with volunteers like Tracee Chambers helping to coordinate the effort.

Local businesses pitched in with discounts to support the program, and Maor expressed a desire to continue helping the kids pursue their interest in hockey. He mentioned providing information about financial assistance programs and potentially lending out equipment to ensure the kids can continue playing.

Looking ahead, Maor hopes to secure corporate sponsors to cover costs for the next season of the program. He believes that hockey teaches valuable life skills and wants to continue providing opportunities for kids to learn and grow through the sport. Interested sponsors can reach out via email to learntoplayhockey@protonmail.com.

Overall, the Learn to Play Hockey program in Newmarket has been a success, thanks to the dedication and support of the community. The kids involved have had a positive experience, and the organizers are committed to helping them continue their hockey journey.
