Iron Mountain Mountaineers Drop Doubleheader to Hancock Bulldogs
IRON MOUNTAIN — The Iron Mountain varsity baseball team faced a tough challenge on Friday as they dropped both games in a doubleheader to Hancock at Ranger Field. The Mountaineers’ losing streak now stands at three games after falling 3-0 in the opener and 14-2 in the second game.
In the first game, Niko Burgoon took the mound for Iron Mountain and pitched a solid game, striking out eight batters and allowing only one earned run. However, the Mountaineers’ offense struggled to get going, resulting in a 3-0 loss to Hancock.
The Bulldogs continued their strong performance in the second game, jumping out to an early lead and never looking back. Despite a brief lead for Iron Mountain in the second inning, Hancock’s offense proved to be too much as they secured a 14-2 victory in five innings.
On the pitching side, Ian Marttila, Charlie Anderson, and Jake Powell all saw action for the Mountaineers, but were unable to contain Hancock’s potent lineup.
Offensively, Evan Mendini, Connor Pickett, and Jace Peterson contributed with hits, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Hancock’s dominant performance.
Iron Mountain will look to bounce back as they face Norway at home on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
In other baseball action, the Norway Knights continued their strong season with a doubleheader sweep against Ironwood, winning 10-0 and 17-7. Senior Alex Ortman pitched a no-hitter in the first game, while Owen Baij led the offense with five hits and four RBIs in the second game.
The Niagara Badgers fell short against Lena, losing 4-3 despite a late comeback attempt. Christian Hedmark pitched a solid game, striking out 11 batters, but the Badgers couldn’t overcome Lena’s early lead.
Lastly, the Florence Bobcats suffered a 10-0 loss to conference leaders Crandon, dropping to 2-1 in conference play.
