Gareth Ellis returns to Hull FC in performance department after successful playing career

Former Hull FC Challenge Cup-winning captain Gareth Ellis has made a triumphant return to the club, this time in a new role within the performance department. The 42-year-old, who led the Airlie Birds to back-to-back Wembley triumphs in 2016 and 2017, expressed his excitement at rejoining the club he holds dear to his heart.

After retiring from playing, Ellis took on various roles within the club, including football manager, reserve team boss, and assistant. He also spent time working for the charity Rugby League Cares before deciding to return to Hull FC.

In a statement to the club website, Ellis shared his love for the team, stating, “Hull FC still holds a very special place in my heart. I still love the club. Even over the last couple of months, I’ve been watching games and shouting at the TV, which shows there’s still a great element of care there.”

Director of rugby Richie Myler highlighted Ellis’s deep connection with the Black and Whites and his understanding of what the club stands for as key reasons for bringing him back. Myler emphasized the respect Ellis commands from the playing group and the value of having him on board to help the team reconnect with its identity moving forward.

Ellis’s extensive experience in rugby league, from his early days at Wakefield Trinity to his successful stints at Leeds Rhinos and Wests Tigers, makes him a valuable asset to Hull FC both on and off the pitch. Fans can look forward to seeing Ellis make a significant impact in his new role as he continues to contribute to the success of the club he loves.
