LAHORE, Pakistan (AP) — Exciting news for cricket fans as the Pakistan Cricket Board has announced the appointment of Gary Kirsten and Jason Gillespie as head coaches for white-ball and red-ball cricket, respectively, for the next two years.
The highly experienced Kirsten, who is currently serving as the batting coach and mentor for the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League, will take charge of the Pakistan team immediately after completing his IPL assignment. Meanwhile, former Australian cricketer Gillespie will lead the red-ball team starting in August.
With Pakistan set to play seven Twenty20 matches next month against Ireland and England, Kirsten is eager to join the team in England as they prepare for the upcoming T20 World Cup in the US and the Caribbean in June.
Kirsten, a former South African cricketer who played in three World Cups and coached India to victory in the 2011 World Cup, expressed his excitement about the new role, stating, “My goal is to unite the Pakistan men’s white-ball team, harnessing their considerable talents towards a common objective, and achieving success together on the field.”
On the other hand, Gillespie, who had a successful coaching stint with Yorkshire and Zimbabwe, is looking forward to focusing on test cricket with Pakistan. He emphasized his desire to win test matches and help develop the players to reach their full potential.
The appointments of Kirsten and Gillespie bring a wealth of experience and expertise to the Pakistan cricket team as they gear up for a busy schedule of matches in the coming months.
