Explaining the New F1 Sprint Weekend Format for 2024: Watch the Miami Grand Prix from May 3-5
Formula 1 fans are in for a treat as the Sprint weekend format for 2024 has undergone a significant change, with Sprint Qualifying now taking place on Friday followed by regular Qualifying after the 100km Sprint race on Saturday. The excitement kicks off at the Miami Grand Prix from May 3-5, marking the second of six Sprint weekends this season.
The new format aims to provide teams with more time to make crucial setup changes between sessions, addressing concerns raised during last season’s Sprints. The change in running order allows for a switch in parc ferme restrictions, giving teams the opportunity to adjust their setups based on the knowledge gained from the Sprint race before heading into full Qualifying.
The Sprint Qualifying session remains unchanged in terms of format, with shorter time limits for each part to address engine and tyre concerns. Points for the Sprint race also remain the same, with a total of 36 points up for grabs for the top eight finishers.
Max Verstappen has been dominant in previous Sprint races, winning seven out of 12 races held between 2021 and 2023. However, other drivers like Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas have also tasted victory in the Sprint format.
The Miami Grand Prix promises to be a thrilling weekend of racing, with a packed schedule of events leading up to the main race on Sunday. Fans can catch all the action live on Sky Sports F1, with coverage of the Sprint weekend set to provide plenty of entertainment for Formula 1 enthusiasts. Don’t miss out on the excitement as the Sprint format takes center stage at the Miami Grand Prix.
