“Missouri Western Women’s Tennis Team Splits Weekend Home Stand, Moves to 10-2 on the Season”
The Missouri Western women’s tennis team, also known as the “Griffitas”, had an eventful weekend as they split their home stand matchups. The Griffons started off strong with a 4-3 victory over Northeastern State University, but unfortunately fell short the following day against the University of Central Oklahoma with another 4-3 scoreline.
Prior to this weekend, Missouri Western had a solid record of 10-1, coming off a recent 4-3 win against Southwest Baptist University. The Griffons were looking to continue their winning streak in their conference opener against the RiverHawks.
Despite starting off behind in the doubles matches, the Griffons fought back in the singles rounds with impressive performances from players like Anya Chavez, Lucia Casas Blas, and Cristina Granero Boj. Chavez, who was recently named MIAA Tennis Athlete of the Week, secured wins in both doubles and singles matches.
Graduate student Maria Saez sealed the victory for the Griffons with a thrilling tiebreaker win against the RiverHawks. However, the following day’s matchup against the Bronchos ended in a close 4-3 loss, with the results currently under protest.
An official protest in tennis can lead to various outcomes, but regardless of the result, the Griffitas remain a strong contender in the national rankings. With a current ranking of No. 35 in the nation and fifth in regional rankings, Missouri Western looks ahead to their next matchup against Fort Hays State University Tigers on April 12th.
The Griffitas now hold a 10-2 season record and are 1-1 in conference play, showcasing their determination and skill on the court. Fans can look forward to more exciting matches as the team continues their quest for success in the season.
