Peabody High School’s softball team is off to a blazing start this season under the guidance of new head coach Steve Lomasney. Lomasney, a former standout baseball player at Peabody High and a fifth-round draft pick of the Boston Red Sox, has seamlessly transitioned into his new role and has the Tanners sitting pretty with a 5-1 record.
The team’s success can be attributed to the hard work and dedication of the players, many of whom Lomasney already knew from coaching them in other sports. The girls have bought into Lomasney’s coaching style and are eager to improve and succeed on the field.
With a core group of talented players led by returning Boston Herald All-Scholastics Abby Bettencourt and Logan Lomasney, the team is poised for continued success. Bettencourt, a dominant pitcher with a 0.87 ERA and 10 home runs last season, and Lomasney, a standout hitter with a .500 batting average, nine home runs, and 32 RBI, provide a solid foundation for the team.
Despite the added dynamic of having his daughter on the team, Lomasney approaches coaching each player with the same level of intensity and dedication. The results speak for themselves, with the Tanners ranked fourth in the latest MIAA Division 1 statewide softball rankings.
In other sports news, Georgetown High School’s baseball team is turning heads with a perfect 9-0 record to start the season. Coach Phil Desilets credits the team’s success to the determination and talent of the players, many of whom gained valuable experience as freshmen and are now reaping the rewards.
With a lineup that can hit from top to bottom and a pitching staff that has been dominant, Georgetown is poised to make a deep playoff run this season. Desilets is cautiously optimistic about the team’s prospects but knows that there is still work to be done to achieve their ultimate goal.
Lastly, a special congratulations to Malden High School baseball coach Steve Freker on earning his 400th career win. With a long history of success in the Malden baseball community, Freker’s milestone win is a testament to his dedication and leadership on and off the field.
