In a thrilling showdown on the Schuylkill River, the seventh-ranked Navy lightweight crew faced off against the number two ranked Penn in an Eastern Sprints League matchup. The stakes were high, with the Callow Cup on the line for the first varsity eight victor and the 1919 Team Points Trophy for the cumulative regatta winner.
Despite a valiant effort from the Mids, the host Quakers emerged victorious in the first and second varsity eight races, claiming both trophies. However, Navy’s lower boats had a successful day of racing, with both their third and fourth varsities securing wins in their respective events.
The action kicked off with the fourth varsity eight race, where Navy’s 4V crew dominated the competition, finishing ahead of Penn by 6.0 seconds. The Mids continued their winning streak in the third varsity eight race, edging out the Quakers by a narrow margin of 2.4 seconds.
Penn fought back in the second varsity eight race, securing a 3.4-second victory over Navy. The highly anticipated finale of the first varsity eight race saw the Quakers maintain their lead to the finish line, claiming victory by 7.4 seconds.
Head coach Shawn Bagnall praised his team’s performance, highlighting the improvement shown by the lower boats. With the regular season now complete, Navy will shift its focus to the postseason, starting with the Eastern Sprints on Sunday, May 19 in Worcester, Mass.
