Exploring the Opportunities of LU Rowing Club at Lawrence University

Lawrence University’s LU Rowing Club (LURC) Offers Inclusive and Fun Athletic Opportunity

Lawrence University is known for its strong athletic programs, but beyond the NCAA sports teams, there are also extracurricular organizations that cater to students’ athletic interests. One such group is the LU Rowing Club (LURC), a non-NCAA club that provides a relaxed and inclusive environment for students to learn and enjoy the sport of rowing.

The club’s volunteer coach, Daniel Martin, a Lawrence alum and former rower, emphasizes the importance of having fun and enjoying the sport rather than focusing on competition. With practices ranging from indoor training on rowing machines to outdoor sessions on the river, the club offers a variety of opportunities for members to improve their skills and form.

Members of the LURC appreciate the club’s laid-back atmosphere and flexibility in scheduling. Junior Evy Best highlighted the supportive environment that encourages novices to learn and enjoy rowing without feeling pressured to perform at a high level. Senior Reese Colbert-Pollack also noted the freedom to participate in practices and competitions based on individual preferences.

Typical practices for the LURC involve teamwork exercises, boat maneuvering, and rowing on the water, weather permitting. Indoor practices during inclement weather focus on form and endurance using rowing machines. The club welcomes members of all experience levels and encourages anyone interested in rowing to give it a try.

With four weekly practices and a requirement to pass a swim test for water practices, the LU Rowing Club offers a unique opportunity for Lawrence University students to stay active, learn a new sport, and be part of a supportive and inclusive team. Whether you’re a seasoned rower or a complete novice, LURC provides a welcoming environment for all interested individuals to explore the world of rowing.
