Kailua wins 15th OIA baseball title, Waianae takes Division II crown

Kailua High School’s baseball team made a triumphant return to the top of the Oahu Interscholastic Association with a resounding 8-1 victory over Aiea in the Division I championship game. The win marked Kailua’s 15th OIA title, with longtime coach Corey Ishigo leading the Surfriders to their ninth championship under his guidance.

The victory was especially meaningful for the team’s lone senior, Kaimana Burgo, who spoke of Ishigo’s impact on the team as a father figure. The players rallied around their coach, determined to add another banner to the school’s collection. Ishigo, usually stoic, was visibly moved by the team’s gesture of appreciation.

On the mound, Kailua showcased their depth and talent with Jayden Hunt and Kaalekahi Kuhaulua combining for a stellar performance. Hunt, who bounced back from a rough start in the quarterfinals, delivered four innings of one-hit ball to secure the win.

The Surfriders’ aggressive baserunning and defensive prowess were on full display as they capitalized on Aiea’s mistakes to break the game open in the third inning. Aiea, despite a valiant effort, committed four errors that proved costly in their pursuit of a Division I title.

In the Division II final, Waianae dominated Radford with a commanding 11-1 victory. Shysten Nakasako led the Seariders to their first OIA title since 2017 with a stellar performance on the mound and at the plate.

As the OIA champions, Kailua and Waianae now set their sights on the state tournament, carrying the momentum of their victories into the next stage of competition. The community support and impact of these teams are sure to inspire them as they continue their quest for success on the diamond.
