India’s Boxing Federation Announces Squad for Asian U22 & Youth Boxing Championship 2024

The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) has announced its squad of 50 boxers, including Olympic-bound Preeti Sai Pawar, to represent the country at the upcoming Asian U22 & Youth Boxing Championship 2024 in Astana, Kazakhstan. The championship is scheduled to take place from April 27 to May 7 and will feature some of the best young boxing talents from across Asia.

Preeti Sai Pawar, who secured an Olympic quota by winning a bronze medal at the 2022 Asian Games, will lead India’s charge in the U-22 category. She will be joined by former youth world champion Alfiya Pathan in the 81kg category. The squad also includes reigning youth world champions Devika Ghorpade and Vishvanath Suresh, as well as senior national champions Prachi, Akash Gorkha, and Jugnoo.

The selection of the boxers was based on their performances in the trials conducted by the BFI at the Army Institute of Sports Pune and NCOE Rohtak. The tournament will feature 25 Indian boxers in each category, with both men’s and women’s sections having 13 and 12 weight categories, respectively.

The championship will see the participation of over 400 boxers from more than 24 countries, competing across 25 weight categories. The action will be streamed live on the Asian Boxing Confederation (ASBC) YouTube channel, providing fans with the opportunity to watch the young talents in action.

The BFI secretary general, Hemanta Kumar Kalita, expressed confidence in the selected boxers and believes that they will bring glory to the nation. The tournament presents a significant opportunity for the young boxers to showcase their skills and gain valuable international exposure in one of Asia’s most prestigious boxing events. Fans can expect an exciting display of talent and determination from the Indian contingent at the championship.
