Iron Mountain Falls to Jeffers 17-2 in Varsity Baseball Matchup at Ranger Field
In a tough matchup against the Jeffers Jets, the Iron Mountain varsity baseball team fought hard but ultimately fell short, losing 17-2 in six innings at Ranger Field on Thursday.
The Mountaineers started strong, keeping the Jets’ bats silent through two innings. However, things took a turn in the third inning when Iron Mountain walked four batters and committed an error, allowing Jeffers to score six runs. The Jets continued to add to their lead, scoring four more runs in the fourth inning to pull ahead 10-0.
Despite the deficit, the Mountaineers showed resilience in the fourth inning, rallying to score two runs. Niko Burgoon was hit by a pitch and Jake Powell drove him home with a triple to right field. Powell then scored on a wild pitch, bringing the score to 10-2. However, Iron Mountain wouldn’t score again, and Jeffers added seven more runs in the fifth inning to secure the win.
Coach Jeff McLean acknowledged the challenges his young team faced, particularly in the pitching department. With two freshmen and a sophomore on the mound, McLean emphasized the importance of building confidence and working on hitting their spots.
The Mountaineers will look to bounce back in their upcoming games, including a doubleheader against Hancock and a matchup against Norway on May 1 at Ranger Field.
In other baseball action, the Florence Bobcats extended their winning streak to six games with an 11-6 victory over Three Lakes. Meanwhile, the Niagara Badgers suffered a close 1-0 loss to Coleman, ending their five-game win streak. Both teams will look to regroup and come back stronger in their next matchups.
