Armand Duplantis shines in Diamond League event ahead of Olympics
Armand Duplantis may have missed out on breaking his own pole vault world record, but the Olympic champion still made a strong statement at the second Diamond League event of the season on Saturday. The 24-year-old soared to victory in China with a jump of 6.00m, leaving his competitors in the dust.
After setting a new world record of 6.24m at the Xiamen season opener, Duplantis was aiming to break the mark for a ninth time with the bar set at 6.25m. Despite coming close in his final attempt, he was unable to clear the height, much to the disappointment of fans. However, Duplantis remained positive, stating, “I felt great today, really good. To jump 6.00m today and complete a successful tour, I have a lot of good takeaways.”
In other events, Akani Simbine of South Africa clinched victory in the men’s 100m race, while Briton Daryll Neita surprised everyone by beating pre-race favorite Sha’Carri Richardson in the women’s 200m. World champion Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic also impressed by winning the women’s 400m.
The Diamond League season is in full swing, with the next event scheduled in Doha on May 10. With a total of 15 meetings planned this year, athletes are gearing up for the season finale in Brussels in mid-September, following the Tokyo Olympics.
Despite missing out on another world record, Duplantis’ dominant performance in China has set the stage for an exciting season ahead. Fans can expect more thrilling competitions as athletes continue to push the boundaries of their sport.
