Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton Eligible for Ryder Cup, Sergio Garcia Frozen Out: LIV Golf Updates
Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton are set to receive good news over their Ryder Cup eligibility, despite their recent decision to join the LIV Golf tour. The two golfers will have the opportunity to play in next year’s Ryder Cup if they pay fines for their “suspensions” while playing on the new tour.
The DP World Tour CEO, Guy Kinnings, has confirmed that direct talks have yet to take place between all parties involved to reach a permanent agreement to end the ongoing conflict in the sport. LIV Golf rebels are being issued suspensions and fines for playing events on the Saudi-backed tour without releases from the DP World Tour.
While Ryder Cup legends Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood, and Sergio Garcia have resigned and become ineligible for Team Europe, Kinnings has made it clear that Rahm and Hatton can still be considered for the team as long as they meet the qualification criteria.
Kinnings emphasized that Rahm has not written himself out of the Ryder Cup and that as long as players abide by the rules and accept the penalties for playing on the LIV Golf tour, they can still be eligible for selection.
Despite the recent ceasefire in the sport, little progress has been made in negotiations to unify the sport. Rory McIlroy is ready to return to the PGA Tour policy board to help find a solution, but key parties have yet to meet together to discuss a potential agreement.
Kinnings stressed the importance of finding a solution that works for everyone involved and expressed optimism that with the right intent and willingness to compromise, a deal can be reached. The involvement of players like McIlroy in the negotiation process is seen as a positive step towards resolving the conflict and unifying the sport.
