Dusty Baker Honored with Lifetime Achievement Award by Baseball Digest

NEW YORK (AP) — Dusty Baker, a legendary figure in Major League Baseball, has been awarded the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award by Baseball Digest. The 74-year-old retired icon, who spent an incredible 56 years in the majors as a player, coach, and manager, was recognized for his significant contributions to the game.

Baker, who officially retired after the 2023 season, expressed his gratitude for the honor in a news release, stating, “Receiving this award is a tremendous honor. I never thought that I’d be in the class of the people that received this award. I know that my late mom and dad would be proud of me. This is really special.”

Throughout his illustrious career, Baker made a lasting impact on the sport. As a player, he achieved numerous accolades, including two All-Star selections, two Silver Slugger awards, and a Gold Glove. He also played a pivotal role in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 1981 World Series victory.

Transitioning to coaching and managing, Baker continued to excel, winning three NL Manager of the Year awards and leading five different franchises to division titles. His crowning achievement came in 2022 when he guided the Houston Astros to a World Series championship.

Commissioner Rob Manfred praised Baker’s accomplishments, stating, “Dusty represents leadership, goodwill, and winning baseball. His ability to connect with others, across generations, is second to none. He is a championship manager and player. But, most importantly, Dusty is an extraordinary ambassador for our national pastime.”

Baker’s selection for the Lifetime Achievement Award was the result of voting by an 18-member panel, which included esteemed figures such as Bob Costas, Sandy Koufax, and Tony La Russa. His induction into this exclusive club solidifies his legacy as one of the greatest figures in baseball history.
