Dusty Baker Wins Baseball Digest’s Lifetime Achievement Award

Dusty Baker Honored with Lifetime Achievement Award by Baseball Digest

NEW YORK (AP) — Dusty Baker, a beloved figure in Major League Baseball, has been awarded the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award by Baseball Digest. The 74-year-old retired following the 2023 season after an impressive 56-year career in the majors as a player, coach, and manager.

Baker joins the esteemed company of past winners Willie Mays, Vin Scully, and Joe Torre, who have all made significant contributions to the game of baseball. The annual award recognizes individuals who have dedicated their lives to the sport and have left a lasting impact on the game.

In a statement following the announcement, Baker expressed his gratitude for the honor, saying, “Receiving this award is a tremendous honor. I never thought that I’d be in the class of the people that received this award. I know that my late mom and dad would be proud of me. This is really special.”

Baker’s career in baseball began in 1968 when he made his debut with the Atlanta Braves as a teenager. Over the course of 19 seasons as a player, he earned numerous accolades, including two All-Star selections, two Silver Slugger awards, and a Gold Glove.

After retiring as a player, Baker transitioned into coaching and managing, leading five different teams to the playoffs and winning a World Series championship with the Houston Astros in 2022. He currently ranks seventh on the all-time wins list for managers with 2,183 victories.

Commissioner Rob Manfred praised Baker for his leadership and contributions to the sport, stating, “Dusty represents leadership, goodwill, and winning baseball. His ability to connect with others, across generations, is second to none. He is a championship manager and player. But, most importantly, Dusty is an extraordinary ambassador for our national pastime.”

Baker’s impact on the game of baseball is undeniable, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of players and fans alike.
