Fara Williams, England’s Most-Capped Player, Announces Retirement from Professional Football
Fara Williams, England’s most-capped player, has announced her retirement from professional football at the end of the season, bringing an end to a remarkable career that spanned nearly two decades. The midfielder, who had been with Reading since 2017, made 172 appearances for her country and played at three World Cups.
During her illustrious career, Williams helped the Lionesses finish third at the 2015 World Cup and was a runner-up at Euro 2009. She also represented Great Britain at the London 2012 Olympics and won two Women’s Super League titles with Liverpool, as well as the FA Cup with both Everton and Arsenal.
In a statement posted on social media, Williams expressed her gratitude for the incredible highs she experienced in the game and her excitement for the next chapter in her life. Despite receiving offers to remain in the game, she has decided to retire and pursue opportunities in the media and coaching.
Williams’ decision to retire was influenced by a kidney condition, nephrotic syndrome, which she was diagnosed with in 2020. The illness played a significant role in her decision, as she prioritized her health and well-being.
Having received an MBE in 2016 for her services to women’s football and charity, Williams has already transitioned into a role as a pundit in the media since retiring from the game. Her impact on and off the field has solidified her status as an icon of the game, with Manchester United Women manager Casey Stoney praising her as such. As Williams closes this chapter of her career, the football world will undoubtedly miss her presence, but eagerly anticipate her future contributions in the sport.
