Mapletown senior A.J. Vanata has made a big decision about his future in sports, signing his Letter of Intent to continue his football, baseball, and academic careers at West Liberty University. The talented athlete had been torn between the two sports, but ultimately decided he couldn’t choose just one.

Vanata, a standout on the football field under coach George Messich, was a key player in an undefeated regular season and a playoff victory during his junior year. On the baseball diamond, he shined for a Maples team that has faced challenges in recent years.

After being recruited in both sports, Vanata made the bold choice to pursue both at the collegiate level. West Liberty University, which had shown interest in him for both football and baseball, was the perfect fit for his ambitions.

“I just love both sports and going out there and competing,” Vanata said. “It keeps me focused and locked in. I love playing them both equally. I couldn’t pick one or the other.”

In football, Vanata was a four-year starter and team captain for the Maples, earning numerous accolades for his performance on the field. He is expected to contribute on the defensive side for the West Liberty football team.
