Nico Hulkenberg signs multi-year deal with Sauber, set to join Audi in F1
Nico Hulkenberg’s return to Sauber on a multi-year deal has sent shockwaves through the Formula 1 world, with the German driver set to join the team as they transition to become the Audi factory team in 2026.
The 36-year-old veteran, who has been with Haas since last year, expressed his excitement at the prospect of representing a German manufacturer in Formula 1.
“The prospect of competing for Audi is something very special,” Hulkenberg said in a statement. “To represent the factory team of such a car brand with a power unit made in Germany is a great honor for me.”
Hulkenberg, who made his F1 debut in 2010, has had stints with Force India, Sauber, and Renault before joining Haas. He has been a valuable asset to the team, scoring nine of their 12 points in the 2023 season.
Sauber CEO Andreas Seidl expressed his delight at welcoming Hulkenberg back to the team, highlighting his speed, experience, and commitment to teamwork.
“With his input, on a professional and personal level, he will be an important part of the transformation of our team – and of Audi’s F1 project,” Seidl said.
Meanwhile, Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu thanked Hulkenberg for his contributions to the team and praised his impact on their performance.
As Hulkenberg moves on to Sauber/Audi, speculation is rife about who will replace him at Haas. Formula 2 star Oliver Bearman is the frontrunner for the seat, following an impressive debut at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.
With the F1 landscape set to change dramatically in 2026 with new regulations and the entry of Audi as a manufacturer team, all eyes will be on Hulkenberg as he embarks on this new chapter in his career.
