Harvard University is hosting a virtual discussion on the impact of sports as a tool for social change, featuring prominent leaders in the basketball world. The event, scheduled for April 23 at 5:00 p.m. via Zoom, will delve into how the skills developed on the court can positively influence communities by promoting inclusivity, diversity, and breaking down barriers.
The panelists for this event include Tommy Amaker, the Thomas G. Stemberg ’71 Family Endowed Coach for Harvard Men’s Basketball. Amaker has led the Crimson to unprecedented success during his tenure, with seven Ivy League championships, four NCAA tournament appearances, and numerous coach-of-the-year awards to his name. His impact on the team and the community has been profound, making him a key figure in the discussion on sports and social change.
Joining Amaker is Carrie Moore, the Kathy Delaney-Smith Head Coach for Harvard Women’s Basketball. In her first year at the helm, Moore guided the Crimson to historic heights, including a program-best win total and a trip to the Ivy League Tournament Championship game. Her leadership and coaching prowess have been instrumental in the team’s success and in promoting diversity and inclusivity in the sport.
Also on the panel is Marshall Plumlee, a former NBA player and US Army Ranger Infantry Officer. Plumlee’s unique background as a professional athlete and military officer brings a valuable perspective to the discussion on leadership and social change through sports. His experiences on the court and in the military have shaped his understanding of teamwork, resilience, and the power of sports to unite communities.
The event will be moderated by James I. Cash, the James E. Robison Professor of Business Administration, Emeritus, at Harvard Business School. With a wealth of experience in both the business and sports worlds, Cash will provide valuable insights into how sports can be a catalyst for positive change in society.
