Bismah Maroof Retires: Pakistan’s Trailblazing Woman Cricketer Ends 17-Year Career

Bismah Maroof, Pakistan’s trailblazing cricketer and former captain, has bid farewell to her illustrious 17-year international career, leaving behind a legacy that transcends the boundaries of the cricket field.

The 32-year-old left-handed batter announced her retirement after Pakistan’s recent 3-0 defeat against the West Indies in the one-day international series. With 3369 runs in 136 one-day internationals and 2893 runs in 140 Twenty20 internationals, Maroof leaves as Pakistan’s record-holder in both formats.

Having captained Pakistan in 62 T20Is and 34 ODIs, Maroof’s leadership and batting prowess have been instrumental in shaping the women’s cricket landscape in Pakistan. Despite bidding adieu to international cricket, Maroof will continue to showcase her skills in league cricket.

Maroof’s journey has been nothing short of inspirational, as she emerged as a beacon of gender equality in a society where women’s participation in sports faces numerous challenges. Her decision to embrace motherhood in 2021 led to the implementation of a maternity clause in central contracts for women cricketers by the PCB, ensuring paid maternity leave for players.

During the 2022 Women’s World Cup in New Zealand, Maroof and her daughter Fatima captured the hearts of fans worldwide, with videos of Indian players playing with the baby going viral on social media. The ICC even shared a heartwarming photo of the mother-daughter duo, highlighting the spirit of cricket transcending borders.

As Maroof embarks on a new chapter post-retirement, she expressed her gratitude to the PCB for their unwavering support during her journey as a mother and a cricketer. With gold medals in the Asian Games and multiple appearances in World Cups, Maroof’s contributions to women’s cricket will be remembered for years to come.
