Former Long Beach Poly Coach Raul Lara Named Mater Dei Football Coach
Former Long Beach Poly coach Raul Lara has been named as the new head football coach at Mater Dei, taking over the reins from Frank McManus who led the team to Division 1 and state Open Division titles last year. Lara, who won five Division 1 titles during his 13-year tenure at Poly, is set to bring his wealth of experience and success to the Monarchs.
The decision to appoint Lara comes after a period of uncertainty following McManus’ dismissal two weeks ago. Despite being the favorite for the job, the delay in naming Lara raised questions among fans and observers. However, Mater Dei President Michael Brennan is confident in Lara’s ability to lead the team, citing his track record of academic achievement, character development, and community involvement.
Lara’s coaching experience extends beyond the high school level, having served as an assistant coach at Servite under Troy Thomas during the COVID-19 season. His familiarity with members of the Mater Dei coaching staff from his time at Servite, as well as his positive relationship with former Mater Dei coach Bruce Rollinson, bode well for a smooth transition.
Thomas, who believes Lara will excel in his new role, emphasized the importance of Lara’s strong character and faith. With spring football practice on the horizon, Lara is eager to hit the ground running and implement his own vision for the team.
As Mater Dei looks to turn the page from past controversies and build a culture of success both on and off the field, Lara’s appointment signals a new era for the storied program. Fans and players alike will be eager to see what the future holds under his leadership.
