Geraint Thomas to Lead Ineos Grenadiers at Giro d’Italia
Last year’s Giro d’Italia runner-up Geraint Thomas is set to lead the Ineos Grenadiers team at the upcoming race, the British outfit announced on Thursday. The former Tour de France winner, Thomas, 37, will head an experienced squad that is gearing up for the year’s first Grand Tour.
“The core is the same as last year’s Giro team, with some great additions for this year,” said Thomas. “We have spent a lot of time together at training camp; we know what we need to do and are all feeling super motivated to get the job done and deliver.”
Thomas, who narrowly missed out on the Giro victory last year, will have strong support in the GC battle from Dutchman Thymen Arensman and road captain Ben Swift. Italian powerhouse Filippo Ganna is expected to dominate the time trials, while young talents like American Magnus Sheffield and Norwegian Tobias Foss will make their Grand Tour debuts.
“We’ve selected a strong, versatile lineup for this year’s Giro which will enable us to race the way we love,” said Director of Racing Steve Cummings. “In Geraint, we have one of the most experienced riders in the peloton to lead the charge to Rome.”
Thomas, who is aiming to ride both the Giro and Tour de France this season, will face tough competition as the Giro kicks off in Turin on May 4 and concludes in Rome on May 26. With a talented team backing him, Thomas is ready to take on the challenge and fight for the top spot on the podium.
