Laird Veatch Named New Director of Athletics at University of Missouri
The University of Missouri has announced that Laird Veatch will be taking over as the new director of athletics for Mizzou, starting on May 1, 2024. Veatch, who has been serving as the director of athletics at the University of Memphis since October 2019, brings with him a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success in collegiate athletics.
University of Missouri President Mun Choi expressed his excitement about Veatch’s appointment, stating, “AD Veatch is a proven leader with the vision we need to achieve our championship goals. I want to thank Curator Blitz and the search committee for identifying the right leader to build upon the incredible momentum of Mizzou Athletics.”
Veatch, a former football student-athlete at Kansas State University, has over 25 years of experience in intercollegiate athletics, with stints in both the Big 12 and Southeastern Conference. During his time at Memphis, Veatch oversaw several facility projects and renovations, including an indoor football facility and a new tennis center. He also led Memphis’ innovative Name, Image, and Likeness program, which recently received a $25 million investment from FedEx.
Veatch’s return to Mizzou comes at a time of great success for the university’s athletics program. In 2023, Mizzou football finished the season ranked No. 8 in both major polls, while gymnastics and wrestling also enjoyed national success. The university has recently approved a $250 million project to modernize Memorial Stadium, further enhancing the fan experience.
In a statement, Veatch expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to lead Mizzou Athletics, saying, “I am honored and humbled to serve the university and to do my part to elevate Mizzou Athletics to unprecedented heights.” His appointment has been met with enthusiasm from the Mizzou community, with many looking forward to the future of the athletics program under his leadership.
An introductory press conference for Veatch will be held later this week, following the approval of his contract by the UM Board of Curators. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development in Mizzou Athletics.
